Jane McKeating is associate head of the Department of Design at the Manchester School of Art. She is also co-author, with Alice Kettle, of Machine Stitch Perspectives and Hand Stitch Perspectives. Jane has spent more than 25 years making embroidered textiles. She finds the portability of hand stitching to be an ideal complement to the demands of her full-time position as she is able to produce work daily on her train commute. Jane’s contemporary stitch practice utilises digital printing, hand stitch and cloth to create visual narratives. This approach is reflected in her artwork Waiting for Layla.
A story: Lydia waiting and waited on the hot balcony. The moments stretching and shrinking like elastic. A vague expectation settled on her. Maybe Layla would arrive today...
